Vegetarians, for the most part, have come to expect their food to be bland or boring when dining out. At times they just play it safe, resulting in them picking the same thing over and over again. 

As someone who loves Indian cuisine, when I think of vegetarian dishes, my mind automatically races to the thought of curry. Tasty, well-seasoned and 100% vegetarian dishes that any vegetarian will love.

With all that in mind, I’m Savvy has put together a list of our 6 favourite veggie curries!

Aloo Gobi (Potato and Cauliflower) – This dish is a classic in many South Asian households and as such is widely available in most Indian restaurants. Made with cauliflower, potatoes, peas and spices (depending on how spicy you want it). This dish always tastes fresh and packs quite the culinary punch.

Kadai Paneer– Paneer dishes in general are excellent and I could have included several on, but this dish is the most popular. It features regularly on blogs as well as recipe websites, and for good reason. It is a wonderfully simple, yet delightfully stylish restaurant dish.  Made from paneer cheese and flavoured with fresh coriander seeds, chillies and spices. A must have dish with a great texture.

Aloo Saag (Potato and Spinach) – This curry is a vegetarian powerhouse. Made with spinach and potatoes, this simple dish is seasoned with chillies, ginger, turmeric and mustard seeds. Like with all of the curries on this list, aloo saag can be as spicy or mild as you like (just ask when you order). Delicious and flavourful, this dish is an excellent side dish or main, that will definitely leave your taste buds tingling.

Bhindi Bhajee (Okra): Some see this as a difficult ingredient to use, but the Indians have it down to a t! This curry is made with Okra, tomatoes and garlic, and seasoned with various spices. The texture of this dish is usually rich and has a mild or spicy taste depending on your preference.

Mixed Veg Curry- The name of this dish can vary depending on where you eat it from. Essentially every curry house and Indian restaurant will have a mixed veg curry, usually containing onions, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so much more. I recommend having this dish dolloped over some pilau rice. Yum!  

Dahl (Lentils and or beans) – Everyone who has delved into the world of curry knows or has heard of Dahl. It is a staple of south Asian cuisine. There are so much varieties of Dahl that I could actually put together an entire separate list on it. Spiced lentils and or beans, encapsulated in a heavenly sauce that when prepared well adds a real oomph. Great textures and great flavours, what more could you ask for!

There you have it. Our 6 favourite vegetarian curries. There is so much variety out there. A lot more than you might think! So go out, have a taste and be as adventuress as you possibly can!
