Six months ago, the famous, or in most recent years ‘infamous’, Shakespeare Inn on Sadler Gate closed its doors for the last time And here became the birth of the Dog & Moon.
Landlord Mark Haworth (27) has been in the pub game all of his working life, and is committed to serving great drinks in a hospitable atmosphere. “Everything we do at the Dog & Moon is about independence. Independent suppliers, independent sourcing and independent of any brewery or pub-company.”
Mark and Katie had both previously been managers for a chain, where they earned the Campaign for Real Ale’s prestigious ‘Pub of the Season’ award.
He continues: “Seventy percent of our rotational cask beers are sourced from local suppliers, and supporting local businesses is something that we are both advocates of’’.
His wife and business partner, Katie (24), carries on the sentiment of supporting local business. “We are one of the first bars to stock Derbyshire’s first distilled gins, Shining Cliff by White Peak Distillery. It’s made just around the corner from where I was brought up!
All the meat on our menu is sourced from reputable butchers, who have a personal relationship with the farmers from which it is reared.” Katie makes her own scotch eggs in multiple flavours fresh every day, and ingredients are rotated with the season.
But it’s not just the food and beer that is locally sourced. Well, kind of!
Their own blend of artisan coffee is provided by Buxton Roastery, just down the road, and is concocted of direct-trade, 100% Arabica Thai, Kenyan and Indonesian beans.
Over twenty gins, a dozen whiskies and a great selection of rums, vodkas and liquors make the Dog & Moon a destination that anyone can feel comfortable.
Music is a passion of both Katie and Mark (they met at a local festival!) and so a programme of live music including weekly acoustic gigs in the bar, open mic nights, and, once it’s warmed up a bit out there, full band concerts and showcases in the heated and covered patio garden!
