How it all Began.
Paul originally from North London moved to Derby 11 years ago working as a club, pub promoter and consultant in the area where he helped to promote up and coming bands.
Paul who at the time was a passionate promoter about the music scene realised there were few venues where grass roots upcoming bands could play live music in Derby. This is when Paul decided to focus on finding a venue that would supply bands from all over the country and outside the UK with the platform they needed to help get noticed and succeed in the music industry.
The Hairy Dog first opened its doors in Derby on Becket Street just 6 years ago with great success playing host to bands such as Slaves, Sleaford Mods, the Blockheads, Cockney Rejects, Old Firm Casuals, UK Subs, Suburban Legends, Unearth, Shadows Fall, The Acacia Strain and hundreds more.
Playing regular gigs for Punk, Ska, Folk, Indie, Rock and Metal, the Hairy Dog offers huge diversity in music. As Paul stated “bands that play live and need a platform are struggling, and it’s hitting them hard, and without venues like The Hairy Dog there will be no music scene left in the UK.”
Since opening its doors in 2012 The Hairy dog has become a favourite port of call on the UK touring circuit and just a few years ago saw the opening of their new 400 capacity venue room, with an impressive new stage, p.a lighting rig, cloak room and most importantly their new bar. They also have 3 large outdoor areas which are covered and heated.
For the last 6 years Paul has been running “Punks Against Cancer”. The idea came from a fellow promoter Aero who had a family member pass away from Cancer and wanted to help raise as much awareness and money for Macmillan as possible. Punks Against Cancer is also close to Paul’s heart, after losing his father to cancer.
“The sixth Punks Against Cancer promises to be the biggest weekend to date!! This will be the weekend of 15th 16th and 17th July 2018. We will once again be Raising monies for Macmillan Cancer Support”
“To date we have raised £12,026.00 for this worthwhile charity, and for most of us, we have seen how passionate Macmillan Cancer Support is, at what they do best. Hopefully we will see familiar faces and new ones as this event grows and grows.”
The main aim for the event is to raise as much as possible, all the bands play on massive discounted rates or play for free. There will be raffle and prizes to be won over the 3 days that are donated either by The Hairy Dog or local businesses with all proceeds going to the Macmillan fund.
Bands confirmed so far include (in no order):
